New York Screening of Mele Murals feat. Pua Case - Oct. 14

Mele Murals will be screening on Friday, Oct. 14th at 4p at the Margaret Mead Festival in New York. This screening will feature a very special guest. Auntie Pua Case will be coming from the Big Island for Q&A following the film!

Don't miss this opportunity to meet one of the leaders of the Native Hawaiian community featured in the film. She is an activist, cultural practitioner, educator and mother.

Auntie Pua recently went to North Dakota to stand with the Standing Rock Sioux in their effort to protect their land and water from the construction of the 1,172-mile Dakota Access Pipeline.

Please back Mele Murals on Kickstarter

I've never launched a Kickstarter campaign until now. We really need your help to get our film Mele Murals across the finish line and more importantly to share the film with the world! Please donate if you can and share: http://kck.st/1NBAlK2  Thanks in advance!

As many of you know, it is extremely difficult and to find funding for community-based documentaries, especially for projects coming from WITHIN the Native Hawaiian community. This is the first time I've ever asked my friends to donate money but it's only because I feel so strongly about sharing the strength and beauty of this story.

Mele Murals Chicago Premiere

Had a great sold-out Chicago Premiere at the Gene Siskel Film Center as part FAAIM's Chicago Asian American Showcase. Tim Hugh and FAAIM have always supported my work over the years and I always look forward to screening in the Chi, even if it's snowing in April.

Mele Murals features the students at Kanu o ka ʻĀina in Waimea, HI. Kanu alum Alyssa Heenan now goes to college in Chicago and was able to see herself projected on the big screen. She was a senior in HS when we shot the film.

The Mele Murals family has a far reach, even in the Midwest. Estria Miyashiro's family in Chicago came to the screening. Estria is one of the main characters featured in Mele Murals.

The highlight of every trip to the Chi is catching up with my dude Steve Moon and his wife Tina. This time they took me to Papas Cache Sabroso and introduced me to the jibarito! Now I'm always going to have to hit this spot up when I'm in town.

At least I got to break in my new foamposite boots.

Mele Murals World Premiere

Cinematographer Justyn Ah Chong, me, Executive Producer Keoni Lee, Associate Producer Aina Paikai

We did it! The sold-out World Premiere of Mele Murals at the Oakland Museum of California was exactly what we had envisioned! We were privileged to have our premiere at CAAMFest which has been supporting my work since my first film.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out. The strength of our communities were on full display that night and left me grateful and inspired. The event started with live paintings by Prime and Estria - the artists featured in the film - and ended with performances by Bambu, Geo and Sabzi.

The premiere was part of Friday Nights @ OMCA featuring Off The Grid food trucks.

Prometheus Brown and Bambu performed at The Bar after the screening.
